The Production Guild is pleased to have secured Susanna Wyatt to tutor the 'The Business of You' short course at the PG Offices, Pinewood Studios.
- Do you know at any given time what you have in your bank account?
- Do you know if you can afford to turn down a job?
- Are you comfortable running yourself as a business?
- Is submitting accounts to your accountant a pleasure, done well before the filing deadline?
If you answered "no" to these questions, this short course is for you.
The course is aimed at freelancers with a mixture of PAYE and Self-employed income, for those of you who want to become totally self-employed and also for those of you who would just like to have more control over your finances and financial well being. It will also show that controlling money is fun and a better way of living than having money control you.
During the course of two sessions it will cover the following topics:-
How to keep effective financial records
We will look at the requirements of HMRC with regard to record keeping. This will cover PAYE and self employed records, VAT, invoicing.
Different systems will be looked at and participants will be asked to share their systems.
We will look at allowable expenses and how to ensure you are claiming what you can.
How to prepare personal budgets
We will look at how to be realistic about the cost of running a business with an eye on how to also have a life! We will also discuss how to save for tax, holidays and eventually retirement.
How to manage personal cashflows
Each participant will be asked to bring a list of their "standing still/just putting the lights on" regular payments. We will then construct a user-friendly cashflow showing how you can stay on top of your expenditure and plan your workflow.
This will follow the discussions from personal budgets.
How to be a successful one person business
We will discuss the highs and lows of running yourself as a business.
Course Tutor
Susanna Wyatt did her first cashflow in 1986 when she decided to leave her first job and strike out on her own. Working predominantly in the film industry Susanna started out as a production accountant in 1990 (self employed). In 2000 she was recruited to be Head of Physical Production for Pathe Pictures who at that time had just been awarded one of the lottery franchises (employed). In 2004 she began working as a freelance photographer (self employed). After a maternity cover year at Pathe (2006-2007) Susanna now has a portfolio career – she works as a Group Financial Controller for a very successful Headhunter firm specialising in Communications (employed), and as a Unit Stills Photographer (self employed).

With the ever increasing complexity of film funding the demands on the production accountant, to report to various interested parties in a number of different ways are increasing. For example a UK/Hungarian co production claiming the UK and Hungarian tax credits requires the same set of information to be presented to auditors in each of the countries in a different but detailed way in order for them to streamline and optimize the tax credits that they can achieve for the production.
Jane Corden and Dan Palmer of Moneypenny Services who have worked with auditors, financiers, completion guarantors and producers on multiple complicated co productions around the world will present a workshop for the accountant to help them manage the information requirements on all productions from the simple UK tax credit to the more complicated multi partner co production with multiple tax credit claims.
Save everyone the heartache especially yourselves by setting up a flexible system with all needs considered from the outset. It is all in the detail and preparation.
This day long training day will take place at the PG Offices, Pinewood Studios on Monday 27th September 2010.
Places are priced at:
PG Members: £120
Non-Members: £200
Places can be booked by e-mail through the link at the bottom of this article and please state how you would like to make the payment within this message as well.
